Those lazy summer days…

August 15, 2010 in News

Hello everyone!
We hope everyone has been able to take time with family and friends over these past lazy summer days.

DirectAbundance is still working hard to support our current projects and pursuing new and exciting opportunities. We recently have been contacted by GoVolunteering who wants to partner with us in developing and implementing opportunities for all of you to participate in. We are working together to build volunteer holiday packages in Belize. We are hoping offer everyone a balance between volunteering and a vacation so you can experience the best of both worlds. It is guaranteed to change the way you holiday! Cathy is working hard to have this ready to offer you in 2011!

I am preparing to return to Belize to meet with a Waste Water Garden representative from the Planatary Coral Reef Foundation in the end of August. We are hoping that he will offer the experience and knowledge to begin the development and building of the WWG at Holy Cross School. This is the first step of many to build a healthier community in San Mateo. This garden will then be used to grow fruits and vegetable for the food program, as well as offer an outdoor education opportunity for learning about the importance of the preservation of the environment.

We just finished a ‘Loonies for Learning’ Fund-Raising Campaign to send grade 8 students attending Holy Cross to High School. We believe the way to break the cycle of poverty is through education and we are excited to continue to offer High School Scholarships to children living in extreme poverty. We hope you will take the time to donate to such a worth cause.

Joanne is continuing her dedication to the families suffering from domestic violence. She has taken the information she has learned from the front line workers at her conference and began to fight for what they need to provide better services. She is working at compiling a national service directory that will be given out at the next conference n January. She is passionate about helping those who lives with their lives in danger and the hands of the ones they love. If you feel you can be of assistance, please feel free to contact Joanne. She would love to hear from you.

Again, to all of you, we thank you for your endless support and taking the interest in what we are trying to do for the people with the quietest voice.

Happy Spring!

I hope you have all enjoyed our wonderful weather lately! A definate sign the warmer weather is on its way!

Let me start by thanking everyone for continuing to read and taking the time to leave a comment. You support is a warm reminder of the important work we are moving towards together.

Joanne has returned from her whirl-wind tour and work in Belize. She volunteered and Holy Cross School and met with many social agencies.  She was able to being a movement for victims of domestic violence. Joanne was the guest speaker at the 2 day ‘Unite Against Violence’ Conference at Banana Bank Lodge. She became a clear voice for so many who were witness to or victims of this international epidemic. She spoke loud and clear of the need for safety for these women.  This gave room for people to join together to begin the proactive approach of education in schools and community services providers.  We thank The Word At Work and BNE Trust for making this much needed conference a reality.   Joanne is currently working hard on raising fund and bring people together to build a much needed womens shelter. We are all eager for this success.

I was fortunate enough to of been granteed time off work to go to Belize for 2 weeks in January with my daughter.  I assisted Joanne in preparing for the conference and was fortuanate enough to be able to attend.  I was busy dropping off donations to schools and orphanages from all of you.  Thank you to the numerous businesses such as Jodies Resturant, Queensway Nail and Spa, Dr Hayward and others that ran school supplies and toy drives. The Kings Childrens Homes and Marlas Childrens home were overwhelmed to finally be able to give every child a christmas gift. The schools Ocean Academy and Holy Cross were so grateful for everything we delivered. A special thank you to everyone who donated cash to assist with the shipping cost to deliver all these wonderful things.

I continue to research and explore science and technologies to improve the living conditions of impoverished communities throughout Belize. My research has lead me to become overwhelmingly aware of the issue of sanitation, water and the environment. I am currently working closely with an environmental engineer who is generously shared his knowledge and experience to lead me on the path for sustainability within these communities. We are currently working on plans that are cost effective and practical and that will allow the community to empower themselves to create better living conditions. I am excited about the path that will lead this plan to implementation.

A special thank you to everyone who has helped us. Without you we could not be able to make these goals a reality. A special thanks to Cynthia who has shared knowledge and endless hours typing and assisting in preparing our paperworks, to Patricia, who has harrassed everyone she knows to sell chocolatebars to raise funds for us. .

A thank you to University of Toronto for inviting us to represent DirectAbundance at the Health and Human Rights Conference. This was a wonderful opportunity to meet volunteers face to face and discuss our goals and vision and meet other wonderful people who are working endlessly to speak up for those with the quietest voice. My hat’s off to everyone.

Again many thanks and keep spreading the word of what we do.

Happy 2010!

January 10, 2010 in News

Let me start by saying I hope everyone has had a wonderful holiday season and great health and happiness in 2010. Joanne and I look forward to another year where DirectAbundance will continue to grow and expand, helping more children and communities living in poverty in Belize.
DirectAbundance is off to a great start as our co-founder Joanne has put together a 2 day conference for training counsellors who work with abused women. This is the begining of the work DirectAbundance will be pursuing to support women. It is our hope one day to raise enough funds to build a much needed womans shelter for women wanting to excape abuse.

Our donation drives were a great success! After contacting Childrens Homes in Belmopan, we were able to provide every child at Kings Childrens Home with a Christmas gift. We feel very excited about delivering toys and school supplies to 50 children at KCH and more donation of toys and school supplies going to Marlas Children Home.

We wish Joanne a safe trip as she embarks on a two month journey in Belize, reaching out to schools and communities in need. I know it will be a wonderful learning opportunity for DirectAbundance as she learns in more detail about the communities and their needs and where DirectAbundances help is needed most.

I will be joining Joanne for a much shorter time, taking and delivering donations, helping in needy schools and assisting in the 2 day conference.

Again, a super big THANK YOU to everyone who has helped in this journey and supported impoverished communities in Belize. We can all join and celebrate our successes together, because we would not have been able to do this work without your help and encouragement!

All the very best for 2010!
Heather and Joanne

It is all SEW important

November 22, 2009 in News

Thanks for all your endless support and belief in DirectAbundance. We continue to do what we can to support education and assist with community development.
We have several toy and school supply drives around the Toronto area running right now.  We are elated each time we get the phone call to pick up another load.  People and other organizations have assisted us with shipping.
Just a reminder we have a fund-raiser coming up in Alliston at the Groundswell on Sunday November 29 12:30 – 3:30 (96 Victoria St.). We will be raising funds for an important community garden at Holy Cross school. We have a author book signing and live music for your entertainment. We will be collecting school supplies to ship to needy schools in Belize. Come by for a coffee and say hi!

We are now begining a campaign to collect sewing machines! We have been contacted and asked to support women living in extreme poverty by providing employment opportunities through tailoring and sewing projects in a woman’s co-op. Yesterday we recieved a donation of 10 machines that will help women to become self sustaining. Our partner is providing the training to run these businesses right from their homes! Look in those dusty basements, ask your friends, neighbours and relatives if they have any good working machines for this very important initiative! EVERY MACHINE WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO A NEEDY FAMILY!

And again I remind you to vote for our initiatiive at the Aviva Community Funds web-site! Every vote counts and will continue to support those in need!

From your New Best Friends!

Donation Delivery Success

September 5, 2009 in News

Onced again I am back in Canada, after a rushed weekend to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize. I headed down with 4 big bags of donations, and was a little disappointed that we were unable to get a shipping/excess weight discount from our chosen airline. So we paid 307 USD, to have the extra baggage shipped. Upon my arrival to Belize I was shocked to find out that they had misplaced the donations, and that they would be arriving on a later flight. I flew over to the island and checked into my hotel, Caribbean Villas, for the next few nights.

The people at Maya Island Air were very helpful to me, and tried to get customs to release the bags so I would not have to return to the International Airport, but customs was adamant on seeing me. I reluctantly returned to the mainland to face my fate. I was grateful for the generosity and compassion customs had for me.

When I was there the customs people were friendly and helpful. They released all the donations for Holy Cross, Poly Clinic, and Ocean Academy. The only things that they withheld were the medications for the animals at SAGA.

On Monday it was an early start. Our first stop was Saga to drop off some of the collections of IV supplies, and canine medicine from the Community Animal Allies of Niagara. Next it was off to Caye Caulker to visit with Joni Miller, co-founder of Ocean Academy. Ocean Academy is a high school that is fairly young and will have its first graduate class in 2011. We are excited to be trying to assist the school in its vocational expansion as well as taking supplies over. I will be volunteering there, and with Holy Cross during the winter, on a three month sabbatical. We also rented the house that we will be staying in over the winter while we volunteer between the two schools.

After lunch, we headed back over to the island of Ambergris Caye. A stop at the Poly Clinic, to drop off surgical supplies and IV`s for the sick and a quick golf cart ride up to Holy Cross Anglican School to take another load of donations. I took one of the students shopping for his backpack and school shoes, with a generous donation made by DreamMakers, in Toronto, Canada. After that it was back to the hotel to prepare for the next day.

I rented a car and drove west, all the way across Belize to a place called Clarissa Falls, only 4 miles from the border of Guatamala. I was in awe at the beauty of the land, and shocked at the condition of the schools. They were run down, some with only outhouses, and children walking miles to earn their education. I was able to see the need that exists in all parts of Belize.

I stayed at Clarissa Falls, in a small cabin, which was very rustic. I ate a traditional Belizian dinner outside, amongst the mosquitos and moths. I met with Dr. Martel who is on a medical mission there, and also with Keith Fromm, who is the Founder of For the World. We discussed different charities and some of the difficulties within the education system.

The following day, it was back through the country side with a stop in Belmopan, and back to the airport to return to Canada. It is always difficult to return, but I know that much work awaits. Without the support of those in the `first worlds`our missions could never be completed.

Direct Abundance Heads to Belize

August 21, 2009 in News

It is soon time to hop on board the plane to La Isla Bonita. We are thrilled, once again, to be taking down another load of donations for Holy Cross, that includes some HOT WHEELS CARS, for the boys Christmas presents. To my surprise, I am now delivering medicine and surgical supplies, a donation from Community Animal Allies of Niagra to SAGA, just showing that kindness to animals can also be extended internationally.

In addition, we have been invited by Joni Miller, the founder of Ocean Academy, on Caye Caulker. We look forward to visiting, meeting the staff and students and extending a hand anyway we can to help this school prosper. We are interested in seeing how Ms. Miller was able to establish a school in just seven short months, one of our own long term goals.

Joanne will make her first visit to the mainland, to meet with Dr. Martel, of Green Solutions, and Keith Froom, of 4 the World Belize at Clarissafalls. It is exciting to be networking with so many wonderful people at once, all working toward one goal…..making the world a better place.

Direct Abundance 24 hours a day, 365 days per year

July 26, 2009 in News

Heather and I have a new logo, Direct Abundance 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. WE have found on several occasions we are on the phone discussing our next plan, updating each other on the days events in the middle of the night. There will never be a question of our dedication to this Organization.

The events that have transpired since our last note are numerous. Heather has contacted organizations that build wells in developing countries in hopes that we can get some clean water running into the homes of San Mateo. In addition we are trying to partner with a playground company. It is a goal to ensure that all schools and communities are equipped with a proper and safe area to play in.

We had our first presentation to the Rotary Club in Mississauga. The presentation is informative and concise. We have included a powerpoint presentation that shows some of the short term goals of Direct Abundance, and a brief overview of the work we are currently engaged with.

Our biggest priority right now is shipping. We are actively working on our fundraising goals, and preparing for grants to enable us to make shipments when and where they are needed. An email from Belize Customs House Brokers was a welcomed sight, offering to assist us with the cost of Customs Documents and clearance. Also Diane of QuickSilver Messenger in San Pedro, has been a wealth of information about the shipping contacts, and assisting us. Now we have the challenge of raising $7000.00 to get the load there.

Word came this week from Carol Babb, Deputy Chief Education Officer, Ministry of Education, Belize, that another primary school is needed on the island. With both Holy Cross and San Pedro Roman Catholic Schools turning kids away, because there classes are filled to capacity is an obvious sign that there is lots of work still needed to be done there.

Our long term goal, still remains to assist the community of San Mateo to have the things that ALL people deserve, safe electricity, clean drinking water, space for the children to play and jobs that allow a family to sustain itself. We would like to see the school also be in a position to open its doors to more children and have all the supplies and equipment needed to thrive.

Our Board Meeting is later this week, and we are looking forward to the updates from the other members. We are open, to DIRECT ABUNDANCE 24 HOURS A DAY, 365 DAYS A YEAR!

Things keep moving along!
We have busy trying to get more exposure for DirectAbundance and create more
awareness of the needs in San Mateo and Belize. We started
a facebook group called directAbundance and we have been in contact with the local
paper here in Canada. They were very interested in what we are doing and were great enough to come and
interview me, and find out about Direct Abundance, our recent trip and our future plans. Thank you Brian for taking
the time to come and talk to me. It was a pleasure to see the article in The Alliston Herald yesterday. Heather was also able to get some donated advertising space in a local magazine.

Joanne has been very busy contacting people and organizing the “school in a box” program. We have contacted both the schools and the Poly Clinic to get their wish lists fulfilled. Today we took a tour of the organization, Green Solutions, that is giving us the supplies and equipment to help improve the quality and care in the schools and medical clinic in San Pedro. Now all we need is 9000.00 to get the containers down there. It will be an amazing day, when all those supplies get to the dock of San Pedro.

I met with a grant writer who is willing to help us generate funds for DirectAbundance. Tomorrow we have a meeting to formalize the details of the business.

A community member, and friend of mine has offered to do a book drive for the schools. We have a few fundraisers in the works, and Tamara, from San Pedro Sun, is trying to get a Lion’s Club International Challenge underway. This would be initiated by the San Pedro Lion’s to extend a challenge to other International Lion’s Clubs to raise money for our shipping.

We continue to be amazed at the support from people, organizations and communities both near and far. Our growth over the past three months has been unexpected and and a welcomed surprise. We continue to know that there is enough of everything for everybody, and we are dedicated to DIRECTING THIS ABUNDANCE!!!

All in a Day’s Work

July 1, 2009 in News

Things have certainly not slowed down at all since we returned to Canada. In fact, the pace seems to have increased and Direct Abundance is motivated more now than ever to help the children of Belize and assist the community of San Pedro. Since our return last week, we have started a few new projects.

While in San Pedro we dropped off a small amount of donations and visited the San Pedro Roman Catholic School. The principal took us on a tour and gave us a wish list of things that the school needs. Specifically, the library shelves are empty. We have been contacting Canadian authors, made contact with the local libraries, and are seeking donations of books to be shipped sometime during the late summer. We would like to see the book shelves of both Holy Cross and RC full and overflowing for young readers. The response has been very positive.

We have been in contact with Dr. Martell,of Nova Scotia, who has generously agreed to share his 40 foot container, and to locate a defibulators, to give to the Poly Clinic. We were shocked to learn that the island does not have one of these life saving devices, and since we returned home it seems to be our personal mission to acquire one or two. Green Solutions is ready to fill a container for us with “school in a box” and “doctor in a box”. These include items such as furnishings, materials and school supplies. This company donates the items to charitable organizations, and the charity is responsible for the shipping costs.

Which leads to our next project we are working on. Currently we are in contact with the Lion’s Club and Rotary Club to assist us in raising shipping money. Shipping from Canada is not cheap, but we are confident that the doors will open, and at exactly the right time, we will get what we need to get these much needed items down to the dock in San Pedro. We have contacted the airlines and the airline ambassadors program, to inquire about reduced baggage costs. We have found that shipping can be a real challenge as not many carriers go to Belize from Canada.

Cathy, our Child Care expert, is working on getting donations of safe, quality toys to help open the pre-school at Holy Cross in the fall. She has started a new facebook page, and you can find a list of the items she thinks would be most beneficial to a pre-school and to advance early child development.

Heather of course is busy as ever, networking, writing letter, designing the new power point slide show, which we will use in our presentations to the schools for the high school community service project. In Canada, a student is required to complete 40 hours of Community Services to graduate from highschool. Currently we are in the process of recruiting students here, to assist our organization and to raise funds to sponsor a student through high school in Belize.

The work never ends, but it feels like a hobby. There are times when the road seems long, but we are so determined that I have no doubt that everything will come together.

If you work at something you love, you will never work a day in your life.
